Definition

A motorhome is any self-contained recreational vehicle that has its own engine and driving cab. Within this broad designation, there are three primary types of motorhome, called classes, each with its own unique features. They’re referred to as Class A, Class B and Class C.

Class A motorhomes are the largest models, built on a bus-style chassis, which allows them to be anywhere from 30’ to 45’ long. This makes Class A motorhomes some of the biggest RVs you’ll find on the market.

That massive size is a real boon for full-timers who want to feel like they’re in a residential home on the road, as well as for large families who need a lot of sleeping berths and space to make camping trips and summer vacations more comfortable.

Driveability

The massive size of a Class A motorhome might seem intimidating if you’ve never driven something that large before. However, it’s not as daunting as it sounds. The center of gravity is different than it would be on a passenger car, which makes the vehicle a little more prone to being buffered about by high winds, and you’ll need to be watchful of low-clearance areas that may be too snug for your motorhome to pass through.

You’ll also have to get used to the braking style. Unlike your passenger car or truck, which has hydraulic brakes, a Class A motorhome has air brakes instead. These require you to apply constant pressure over several seconds in order to bring the motorhome to a complete stop. Take some time to practice your braking skills in an empty parking lot, where you can also brush up on turning, reversing and parking your motorhome. This practice will help you to drive confidently when it’s time to hit the road.
